Duelists exist to open rounds and win duels. They enter dangerous areas first, create space for the team and get the first kills. This role suits you if you have good aim, like to take the initiative and can handle pressure. Popular duelists, besides the beginner-friendly Phoenix, are above all Jett (extremely mobile but demanding), Reyna (rewards good aim with self-healing) and Raze (lots of explosive damage). For the start Phoenix is ideal because he heals himself and forgives mistakes. Important to know: as a duelist you carry responsibility – your team expects you to win the duels you seek.

Initiator – the enabler

Initiators clear the way for the team: with recon, flashes and disruption abilities they drive enemies out of their positions and provide information. This role suits you if you like to think along, communicate and serve the team rather than stand in the spotlight yourself. The beginner-friendly KAY/O offers clear flashes and a suppression effect that briefly disables enemy abilities. Other strong initiators are Sova (recon arrows), Breach (many flashes and stuns) and Fade (recon over distance). Whoever plays initiator often wins rounds not through their own kills but by enabling them for their teammates – an incredibly valuable role.

Controller – the strategist

Controllers use smoke and walls to control which sightlines are open or closed. They enable safe attacks and block dangerous angles. This role suits you if you like to plan, keep an overview and shape the battlefield. Brimstone is the easiest entry because he places his smokes conveniently via the map. More advanced are Omen (teleports and blinds), Viper (poison and wall, especially strong on large maps) and Astra (global control but complex). A good controller is the strategic backbone of the team – their smokes decide whether an attack succeeds or ends in a hail of bullets.

Sentinel – the protector

Sentinels defend: they secure sites and flanks, slow down attacks and hold the team together. This role suits you if you are patient, like to hold positions and think defensively. Sage is perfect to start with because she heals, blocks with a wall and can even revive teammates. Other sentinels are Cypher (traps and cameras for information), Killjoy (turrets and traps for area control) and Chamber (traps plus strong weapons). Sentinels are rarely in the spotlight but are indispensable – a good sentinel calls flanks, holds critical angles and gives the team security.

Which role does my team need?

A balanced Valorant team ideally has some of every role: one or two duelists for opening, at least one controller for smoke, one initiator for information and one sentinel for security. In solo queue, however, a role is often missing. That is why it pays to be flexible: if no one picks a controller, you can step in and do the team a huge favour.
