Every Phantom skin belongs to a price tier that Riot marks with small icons in the shop. The tier decides how much tech is inside: entry tiers mostly change the look, while the expensive tiers add custom sounds, animations, level upgrades, variants and finishers.

The stylist: You want your weapon to tell a story? Oni brings Japanese mythology, Reaver dark soul aesthetics, Kuronami the elegant wave – all three sit in the top list above. These skins live on atmosphere, from the first reload to the finisher, and age best for exactly that reason: while loud trend designs come and go, the stylish classics still look premium years later.
The collector: What counts for you is what's gone: Champions 2022 and 2024 have left the shop permanently and are coveted accordingly. What your limited pieces are worth today is shown by the account value calculator.
The showman: If every round is a stage, you want Protocol (the weapon talks!), RGX (RGB + kill counter) or Spectrum (music effects). Expensive, but an experience the whole lobby notices.
The honest answer: it depends on what skins mean to you. Mechanically no skin gives an advantage – damage, spray pattern and handling are identical on every Phantom. What expensive skins really deliver is feedback and joy: better sounds, more satisfying hit feedback, animations that sweeten the wait between rounds.
A proven rule of thumb: the Premium tier (1,775 VP) is the sweet spot. Oni, Ion, Prime//2.0 and Reaver deliver 90% of the experience of the priciest skins for two thirds of the price. Ultra and Exclusive are worth it when a theme really grabs you – or when scarcity and collector value matter to you. The Phantom plays by its own rules – it is the weapon of quiet precision: suppressor, no tracers at range, 30 rounds in the magazine. A good Phantom skin supports exactly that feeling instead of drowning it out.
Sound: The original Phantom sound is muffled and soft – skin sounds replace it completely. Make sure the new sound stays "crisp" rather than mushy; Oni and Prime//2.0 are the reference here. Sight picture: Some skins widen the silhouette or glow while firing – for competitive play, calm models like Ion have the edge. Finisher: The cherry on top. Reaver and the Champions editions have the most atmospheric ones; if you love finishers, go Premium or higher – below that there are none.
For Premium skins and above, the base price often only buys the first stage. The full show – extra effects, animated elements, the finisher and alternative colour variants ("chromas") – is unlocked through level upgrades. These are paid not with VP but with Radianite Points, which you earn through the battle pass or buy in the shop. With the big Phantom skins this really matters: the RGX 11z Pro only unlocks its kill counter via upgrades, the Spectrum its extra audio layers, and the Oni its coveted colour variants.
Our advice for newcomers: factor the Radianite cost into the purchase if a skin tempts you mainly with its effects – otherwise half the show sits behind a second paywall. If you play the battle pass anyway, you collect enough Radianite on the side; every term around chromas, levels and editions is explained in our Valorant glossary. The eternal question. Gameplay-wise: the Vandal kills with one headshot at any distance (160 damage), the Phantom only up close (156 at 0–15 m, then 140) – in return it fires faster, sprays tighter and doesn't give you away with tracers at range. For skins that means: buy for the weapon you actually play. If you use both, start with the Phantom skin of your choice and add the Vandal later – or the other way round. Many collections exist for both weapons, by the way – Reaver, Prime/Prime//2.0, Ion, Glitchpop and RGX 11z Pro each come as Vandal and Phantom versions. If you want a matching loadout, simply stay within one collection.
Since 2021 every world championship has brought a limited Champions bundle – and the featured weapon alternates: 2021 Vandal, 2022 Phantom, 2023 Vandal, 2024 Phantom, 2025 Vandal. So in 2026 the rotation points to the Phantom again. Leak status (unconfirmed!): well-known leakers name September 23, 2026 as the release date of the Champions 2026 bundle, featuring a black-and-gold Phantom with red accents. For collectors this is the date of the year: Champions skins are only available for a few weeks, 50% of the proceeds traditionally go to the participating teams – and afterwards the perceived value rises year after year. The Champions 2022 Phantom is one of the most coveted pieces in any Valorant locker today. Miss the bundle and there is no second chance – which is why it pays to have the required VP ready before the reveal.
The shop price is not set in stone – with a bit of timing you can save on almost any Phantom skin. The biggest lever is the Night Market: six random offers at roughly 10–50% off, and Premium Phantoms like Oni or Ion can appear as long as you don't own them yet. Second trick: bundles instead of single purchases. Bonus for the patient: the battle pass regularly drops solid skins for little money – only the limited Champions editions can never be recovered this way.
Let's put it on record: no. Riot has confirmed multiple times that skins have zero influence on damage, recoil or hitboxes. What is true: a sound you enjoy and a model that doesn't distract you can subjectively feel better – and players who feel comfortable often play more freely. That's psychology, not mechanics. The best Phantom skin is therefore always the one that suits you, at a price you're comfortable with.
