⚡ Quick answer

For low ping, pick the geographically closest server: in Germany that is usually Frankfurt (EU). You can see your ping per server in the Play menu (server selection) – choose the one with the fewest milliseconds.

Killjoy – Valorant Agent

"Which Valorant server is best?" – this question comes up again and again, especially when it involves cheaters, smurfs, toxicity and teamplay. The honest answer up front: the objectively best server is the one with the lowest ping. Everything else – whether a server has "fewer cheaters" – is perception, not a proven fact. This guide gives you both: the hard facts on choosing a server and an honest take on the community opinions.

In short

  • The best server is the one with the lowest ping – that is the only objectively measurable factor.
  • Differences in cheaters and smurfs between servers are anecdotal; there are no official numbers.
  • Toxicity is tied more to language and culture than to the server technology.
  • A server with a single common language can make teamplay easier.

Which Valorant servers exist in Europe?

Valorant runs several server locations in and around Europe. Depending on where you live, one or another is closest – and therefore fastest:

📍
Frankfurt Germany central, very large player pool
📍
Paris France large server, many players from Western Europe
📍
London United Kingdom good for the UK & north-west Europe
📍
Stockholm Sweden strong for Scandinavia & Northern Europe
📍
Madrid Spain good for Iberia, mostly Spanish-speaking
📍
Warsaw Poland good for Central & Eastern Europe
📍
Istanbul Turkey large Turkish player pool
📍
Bahrain Middle East part of the EU region, meant for Middle East players; high ping from Central Europe

For players in Germany, Frankfurt, Paris and Warsaw are usually closest and offer the lowest ping. Bahrain is part of the EU region in Riot’s server list, but it’s generally too far away for Central Europe.

First things first: ping

The ping (your latency to the server, measured in milliseconds) is the only factor that affects your play quality objectively and noticeably. Low ping means your shots and movements register without delay, "peeker's advantage" is smaller, and you far less often fall victim to seemingly unfair deaths "behind the wall". As a rule of thumb: anything under roughly 30–40 ms feels very good. So the most important rule when choosing a server is: take the server with the lowest ping you can reliably get.

How to see and choose your server

Before a match, Valorant shows you the available servers with your ping to each. Here is how to proceed:

  1. Open the game/server selection in the main menu (the Play menu).
  2. There you see the servers with your current ping in ms.
  3. Enable the servers with the lowest ping and disable ones that are very far away.
  4. If you specifically want to play on one server, select only that one – but expect longer queue times.
Extra tip: A wired network (LAN instead of Wi-Fi) often lowers your ping and its fluctuations far more than switching servers does.

Cheaters: are there "clean" servers?

This is probably the most common question – and honesty matters here: there is no official data on which server has more or fewer cheaters. Riot's anti-cheat system Vanguard works across all servers and does its job no differently on Frankfurt than on Madrid. What many perceive as "more cheaters on server X" often has simple reasons: big, central servers like Frankfurt or Paris simply have more players – and therefore more flagged cases in absolute numbers, even though the percentage can be similar. In short: the perception of "fewer cheaters on a smaller server" is understandable but unproven.

Smurfs: where are there fewer?

It is similar with smurfs (strong players on new accounts). Here too there are no per-server statistics. Smurfs appear wherever many players are – and the hidden MMR system pulls them back up over time anyway. Some players report "feeling" that they run into smurfs less often on smaller, regional servers. That may be due to the lower player count – it is not proof. Across many games such impressions usually even out.

Toxicity and language

Toxic behavior depends less on the server location than on language and culture. On an internationally mixed server like Frankfurt, many languages meet – which can cause misunderstandings and frustration. On a more linguistically uniform server like Madrid (mostly Spanish) or Istanbul (Turkish), most people speak the same language, which makes communication easier but does not automatically make toxicity disappear. Unfriendly teammates exist everywhere – the best protection is to mute them and focus on your own game.

Teamplay: does a single-language server help?

There is a genuinely understandable advantage here: when everyone on the team speaks the same language, communication often works better – clear calls, coordinated attacks, fewer misunderstandings. That is exactly one reason some players prefer regional servers: not because of fewer cheaters, but because the teamwork flows more smoothly. If you speak Spanish, for example, Madrid can be more pleasant for teamplay than an internationally mixed server – provided the ping is right.

Is Madrid really the best server?

Many players – maybe you too – have the impression that things are a bit more relaxed on Madrid: mostly Spanish-speaking, lots of talking, and it feels like fewer smurfs or cheaters than on Frankfurt or Paris. That perception is completely legitimate and is often shared in the community. But to be fair: it is a subjective experience, not a proven fact. You will just as easily find players who report the opposite. If Madrid has good ping for you and you feel more comfortable there – great, play there. Just do not expect a measurable "cheater discount": the biggest real advantage of a server like Madrid is the uniform, communicative environment, not a lower cheater rate.

Big vs. small servers – the trade-off

Central servers like Frankfurt or Paris have pros and cons:

  • Advantage of big servers: short queue times, fairer matchmaking (more players = better-matched opponents), stable load.
  • Disadvantage of big servers: internationally mixed (language barriers), more flagged cases in absolute numbers.
  • Advantage of smaller/regional servers: a more uniform language, often more pleasant communication.
  • Disadvantage of smaller servers: longer queue times and potentially less accurate matchmaking, because fewer players are in the pool.

So there is no blanket "best server" – it is a trade-off between ping, queue time and the environment you feel comfortable in.

What you can actually influence

Instead of hoping for the "perfect" server, these things move you forward noticeably:

  1. Optimize ping: Ethernet cable instead of Wi-Fi, stop background downloads, pick the server with the lowest ping.
  2. Report cheaters: use the report function – it feeds Vanguard with leads.
  3. Mute toxic players: one click and the frustration is gone. Focus on your game.
  4. Focus on yourself: across many games, your own skill matters more than the server does.

Spotting cheaters – before you switch

Not every strong opponent is a cheater. Before you blame the server for everything, take a level-headed look: a good player with clean aim, good positioning and map knowledge quickly seems "suspicious" but is often simply better. Real cheats show up more in impossible actions – hits through walls with no cue whatsoever, inhumanly precise snaps onto several targets in fractions of a second. When in doubt: report, mute, keep playing. Switching servers does not solve the problem, because cheaters can turn up anywhere.

Ping, jitter and packet loss – the real technical factors

When we talk about "server quality", technically three things matter. Ping is the pure delay in milliseconds. Jitter describes how much the ping fluctuates – a steady ping of 35 ms feels better than one bouncing between 20 and 80. Finally, packet loss means data packets get lost; this shows up as "teleporting" opponents or rubber-banding. For a smooth feel, what counts is not just low ping but, above all, stable ping without jitter or packet loss. That’s exactly why a wired connection often helps more than switching servers: it noticeably reduces fluctuations and dropouts.

Why the same ping sometimes feels better, sometimes worse

You may know the feeling: one day Valorant runs buttery smooth, the next everything feels delayed – even though the server is the same. That is rarely the server itself and usually your connection: background downloads, a congested Wi-Fi, updates from other devices in the household, or your ISP being under load at prime time. So before you blame the server, check your own network. The cause is often closer than you think.

Choosing a server by where you live

Which server is best for you depends above all on your location. For most players in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Frankfurt is the obvious choice with the lowest ping, closely followed by Paris and Warsaw. If you live further south or speak Spanish, Madrid can become interesting – though the ping from Germany is higher there than to Frankfurt. The key is: just try the servers out. Valorant shows you the ping to each location, and your feel in-game quickly tells you where it runs best.

Can I force my server manually?

Yes. In the Play menu you can specifically enable or disable individual servers. If you select just one, you are guaranteed to play there – but at the risk of longer queues, because the player pool is smaller. If you enable several low-ping servers, Valorant finds a match faster and automatically places you on the best available one. For most people, the second option is better: leave several nearby servers active and let the system pick the best one.

Which server ranks up faster? (The myth of the "easier" server)

A stubborn belief is that certain servers are "easier" – i.e. allow faster climbing. That is not true. Your rank and matchmaking follow your MMR, not the server. On every server you are placed against players of your level. So switching servers does not make you better and gives you no lasting rank advantage. What it can change is the environment – language, communication, your comfort level. That is valuable, but it is not a shortcut to the top.

How the Vanguard anti-cheat works

Riot's anti-cheat Vanguard runs at system level and continuously checks for manipulation in the background – equally for all players, regardless of the chosen server. It combines automatic detection with player reports. No anti-cheat in the world catches every cheater instantly, but the idea that a particular server location is "better protected" is wrong: the protection is the same everywhere. Your reports help the system scrutinize suspicious accounts more closely – which is why it is worth reporting anything suspicious consistently.

What to do about high ping?

  1. Cable instead of Wi-Fi: a wired connection is more stable and usually faster.
  2. Lighten the load: pause downloads, streams and updates on other devices.
  3. Restart the router: surprisingly often fixes intermittent connection problems.
  4. Choose the nearest server: enable the location with the lowest ping in the Play menu.
  5. Check your provider: at prime time the line can be congested – a test at another time shows whether that is the cause.

Community ratings: take with a grain of salt

On forums and platforms like Reddit or VLR.gg, you’ll find endless discussions and "ratings" of EU servers. They are entertaining and give a sense of the mood – but they are subjective and often contradictory. One swears by Frankfurt, the next avoids it; one praises Madrid, another rants about it. Such impressions are heavily shaped by individual experiences and emotions. Take them as inspiration, but make your decision based on facts: your ping and your own in-game feel across several matches.

How to change your region – officially

Within your region you choose servers freely (in the EU, according to Riot: Frankfurt, Paris, Stockholm, Istanbul, London, Warsaw, Madrid and Bahrain). Your account’s region itself can’t be switched with one click. Riot only allows a change if it matches where you actually live – after a move, for example. You request it via Riot’s region-of-residence change page or a support ticket with your Riot ID, email, current and desired region. After that, no further transfer is possible for 90 days. According to Riot, your collection, agents, level, MMR and pass progress move with you; things that don’t transfer include current-season ranked data, purchase history and match history. For normal play the advice stays the same: stay in your home region and optimize via server choice and your connection.

How much ping is still fine?

As a rough guide: under 20 ms is excellent, 20–40 ms very good and for most people barely distinguishable from perfect. Between 40 and 60 ms it is still well playable, but you slowly notice the difference in fast duels. Above 60–80 ms "peeker's advantage" becomes noticeable and reacting precisely gets harder. Avoid anything above 100 ms where possible. For competitive play it pays to consistently choose the server with the lowest stable ping – especially in close duels, milliseconds sometimes decide.

Servers in Competitive and Premier

In normal Ranked you play on the EU servers you enable in the menu. In the team-based mode Premier the team owner picks a zone at sign-up; Riot suggests the zones with the lowest ping for the owner, and the zone can only be changed after unenrolling. Pick it so everyone on the team gets fair ping – if your team comes from different countries, a centrally located zone is often the best compromise. In custom games you set the server directly in the lobby.

Common misconceptions about servers
  • "There are no cheaters on server X": wrong – cheaters can appear anywhere, Vanguard protects all servers equally.
  • "A different server makes me better": no – your rank follows your skill, not the location.
  • "High ping is always the server": often it is your own connection (Wi-Fi, downloads, router).
  • "Small server = better matchmaking": rather the opposite – fewer players can lead to less accurate matchmaking and longer queues.

Conclusion

The best Valorant server is the one with the lowest ping – that is the only factor that objectively improves your play quality. Differences in cheaters and smurfs between servers are unproven, just perception; Vanguard works the same everywhere. What a server like Madrid can really offer is a linguistically uniform, communicative environment – and if that plus a good ping appeals to you, it is a perfectly sensible choice. But do not rely on a "cheater discount"; rely on ping, good communication and your own game. That will help you climb more reliably than any server switch. Play where it feels smoothest for you, report anything suspicious and focus on your own game.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Which Valorant server is best?

Objectively, the server with the lowest ping. For players in Germany that is usually Frankfurt, Paris or Warsaw. Everything else – such as supposedly fewer cheaters – is subjective perception without official data.

Are there fewer cheaters on some servers?

There is no evidence for that. The Vanguard anti-cheat works the same across all servers. Big servers have more players and therefore more flagged cases in absolute numbers, but not necessarily a higher share.

Is Madrid a good Valorant server?

For many, yes – mainly because of the mostly Spanish-speaking, communicative environment. Whether it is best for you, however, depends above all on your ping. There is no proven advantage regarding cheaters.

How do I select my server in Valorant?

In the Play menu, Valorant shows you all servers with your current ping. Enable the ones with the lowest ping. If you select only one specific server, the wait can get longer.

Does switching servers improve my teamplay?

Indirectly: on a single-language server, communication often works better. That can make teamwork easier – but cheaters or toxicity do not disappear because of it.

Which server has the best ping for me?

Usually the geographically closest one. For players from Germany that is usually the Frankfurt/EU location – but your ping depends heavily on where you live and your provider; you can see your value in the Play menu.
