How RR, promotion and demotion work
Ranked Rating, or RR, are the points you collect in competitive mode. Each division – Gold 2, for example – runs from 0 to 100 RR. Reach 100 RR and win your next game, and you climb into the next division, starting again at a low value. Drop to 0 RR and lose again, and you fall a division. A win earns you roughly between 10 and 30 RR, a loss costs you a similar amount. Exactly how much depends heavily on your hidden value.
This hidden value is your MMR (Matchmaking Rating). Riot uses it to gauge your true skill level. If your MMR is above your visible rank, you gain more RR for wins and lose less for losses – the system pulls you upward. Conversely, it slows you down when you are placed above your actual level. Why the estimate fluctuates
The calculator uses a simplified model: it assumes a win yields your set RR gain and a loss costs about 80 percent of it. That produces a net value per game. In reality this is coarser, because your MMR is constantly readjusting, promotion games count differently and outlier streaks distort your balance in the short term. So treat the result as a rough guide, not a guarantee.
The win rate matters most. At exactly 50 percent you gain only a small net amount per game in the model, because wins and losses almost cancel out – climbing then takes a long time. If your win rate falls below about 45 percent, the net value turns negative, and a higher rank is mathematically unreachable at that ratio. Just a few percentage points more win rate shorten the path dramatically – which is why every genuine improvement pays off far more than pure grinding.
Tips to climb faster
The fastest way up is not through more games but through a higher win rate. A few proven levers:
- Play a few agents and one or two maps really well instead of half-knowing everything.
- Warm up your aim before your first ranked game – our guide to aim training shows you how.
- Stop playing when you are tired or tilting two games in a row. Losses rarely come alone.

- Communicate briefly and usefully: a good callout wins more rounds than an extra frag.
And keep in mind: a rank is a snapshot. Anyone who works consistently on aim, positioning and composure climbs almost by themselves – the calculator only shows you how far the road still is.
The Valorant rank system at a glance
Before you can meaningfully calculate your RR, it is worth looking at the whole framework. Valorant's rank system has nine tiers: Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Ascendant, Immortal and, at the very top, Radiant. Each of these tiers – except Radiant – is further split into three divisions, such as Silver 1, Silver 2 and Silver 3. In total that makes 25 placements you work your way up through. When people talk about “valorant ranks,” they usually mean exactly this ladder, and your valorant rr is the currency you climb it with.
One important break in this ladder sits at Immortal and Radiant. Up to and including Ascendant, the fixed limit of 100 RR per division applies. From Immortal onward, however, Valorant uses a running RR account with no division cap, and Radiant is reserved for the few top players of a region – often only a few hundred. That is why the upper tip of the valorant rank distribution is so extremely thinly populated, while most players crowd into Bronze, Silver and Gold. How RR per game is really composed
Many players want to calculate their rr and then discover that two seemingly identical wins award completely different points. That is because there is more to each game than just a win or a loss. The outcome of the match is the most important factor, but it is not the only one. Roughly speaking, the RR gain can be broken into three building blocks that work together.
Win or loss as the base
The outcome determines whether there are any points at all or whether some are deducted. A win usually brings a positive amount, a loss a negative one. That is the frame within which everything else moves. No win, no noticeable gain – which is why your win rate is ultimately the decisive lever when you plan your climb.
The gap between MMR and visible rank
The second building block is the comparison between your hidden MMR and your visible rank. If your MMR is higher than your current rank suggests, Valorant assumes you actually belong further up. It then accelerates you with high gains and mild losses. When the two match, the value settles into balanced amounts. It is precisely this mechanism that makes the question “how many rr per win” have no fixed answer.
Your in-game performance
The third and smallest building block is your personal performance. In the lower and middle ranks, a clearly above-average game can slightly raise your gain or cushion a loss. The higher you go, the more the result alone counts, and from Immortal onward the performance bonus practically disappears. At the top, only whether your team wins is rewarded – not how many kills you collect along the way.
In practice this means: in low ranks, consistently good individual play can speed up your climb; higher up, almost only the win counts. The RR calculator on this page deliberately does not model these subtleties individually but bundles them into a single average value for the gain per win. That makes the estimate more robust, even though it can therefore never hit the exact course of a single session.
MMR and visible rank: two numbers that drift apart
The most common source of confusion is the difference between your MMR and the rank badge shown to you. The visible rank is what you and your teammates see. Your MMR is the internal assessment of your skill that no one can view directly. The two usually move in parallel but can diverge significantly – after a long break, after a rank reset, or when you have improved a lot in a short time.
If your MMR runs ahead of your visible rank, you experience games with large RR gains and sometimes even division jumps until your badge catches up. If your MMR lags behind because you are placed above your actual level, you get little for wins and lose a lot for losses. That feels sluggish, but it is not a bug in the system – it is its way of gently pulling you toward your true level. Anyone who understands this reads meagre gains not as bad luck but as a signal that visible rank and MMR are currently close together.
Promotion and demotion between divisions and tiers
Within a tier you move up division by division: from Gold 1 through Gold 2 to Gold 3. Reach the full 100 RR in Gold 3 and win again, and you change tier and land in Platinum 1. This tier change feels especially rewarding because the colour scheme and badge change. Mathematically, though, it is the same step as any other division promotion – just at a tier boundary.
On demotion, a small protection mechanism kicks in. If you drop to 0 RR, the next loss does not automatically demote you; there is a short buffer. Only when you lose again at this zero mark do you slip a division lower, and you start there not at zero but in the upper range – usually around 70 to 80 RR. This rarely lets a single weak game undo all your progress. For simplicity, the RR calculator assumes each division spans a flat 100 RR and computes the distance to your target as a multiple of that.
Rank reset at season and act start
Valorant is structured into episodes and acts, and with each new act your visible rank is partially reset. That does not mean you start from zero. Your MMR is largely preserved, but your badge drops noticeably – often by several divisions. You then have to play a handful of placement games before a rank is assigned to you again. Because your MMR keeps running in the background, you usually return to your old level fairly quickly, provided your performance stays stable.
This reset matters for climb planning. Right after the act starts, the gap between MMR and visible rank is artificially large, which is why the first games often yield generous RR gains. That is the ideal time to climb quickly, because the system pulls you up anyway. Anyone who only starts late in the act, once everything has settled, barely feels this tailwind. The reset also explains why the valorant rank distribution fluctuates depending on the point in the act: shortly after the reset, many players are temporarily ranked lower than they will be at the end of the act.
Why distribution figures are only estimates
The bars in the distribution tool on this page look precise but are deliberately marked as a rough estimate. Riot does not publish permanent, official distribution tables. Everything circulating online comes from third-party sources such as tracker services that capture only a slice of the player base – namely the accounts queried there. That slice is not representative of all players, and for that reason alone you should read every percentage with some distance.
On top of that, three factors shift the numbers further:
- Region: A fiercely contested region has a different distribution than a smaller one. The same badge can be harder to reach in some regions than others.
- Point in the act: Shortly after the reset, ranks are distributed lower than at the end, once everyone has climbed back up.
- Source and sample: Depending on the tracker and survey method, slightly different values result. Two reputable sites can differ by a few percentage points.
So take the tool's percentile statement as guidance, not as an official classification. It answers the question “roughly, how rare is my rank?” well enough to place you – but it is not an exact ranking of all players worldwide.
Realistic climb planning
The RR calculator shows you a sobering truth: the way up depends almost entirely on your win rate, not on the number of games you play. At exactly 50 percent win rate you gain, on average, only a small net amount per game, because wins and losses almost cancel out. Only from about 53 to 55 percent does the climb become noticeably brisk. That is why pure grinding with an even record is so laborious – you move, but at a snail's pace.
A second, often underestimated effect is streaks. Because Valorant readjusts your MMR after every game, winning streaks reinforce themselves: win several games in a row and your MMR rises, so the following wins tend to bring more RR. Conversely, a losing streak can hit you twice, because falling MMR makes the losses bigger. That is why it is wise to take a break after two losses in a row instead of carrying the tilt into the next game. A common fallacy is wanting to “get back” lost RR immediately – it is exactly in that mood that the games which extend the streak arise.
An honest self-assessment in four questions
- Is my win rate over the last 20 games consistently above 50 percent? If not, playing more alone is not the solution.
- Do the losses come more from individual mistakes or from the team? You can only fix your own mistakes.
- Do I keep playing while tired or tilted? Then every session costs more RR than it earns.
- Do I have a fixed agent and map focus? Without it you give away consistency in every game.
A worked example: calculating RR in practice
A short example makes tangible how the calculator thinks. Suppose you are in Gold 1 at 40 RR and want to reach Platinum 1. That is three full divisions to the target, so 300 RR minus the 40 you have already collected – around 260 RR of distance. With an assumed gain of 20 RR per win and a loss of about 16 RR per defeat, a win rate of 55 percent yields a net gain of roughly 4 RR per game. To bridge the 260 RR you therefore need about 65 games, of which around 36 are wins.
Turn the win rate down to 50 percent and the net gain shrinks to about 2 RR per game – the number of required games almost doubles. This very jump shows why a few percentage points more win rate are worth so much: they do not act linearly but leverage the entire climb. Anyone who wants to honestly calculate their valorant rr should therefore not ask “how many games can I manage today?” but “how do I raise my ratio over the coming weeks?” The calculator above does the mental arithmetic for you and makes this leverage instantly visible with every slider move.
Concrete levers to climb
If you really want to raise your win rate, a few habits that go beyond just playing help. They do not work overnight, but over a few weeks they add up to exactly the few percentage points that make the difference between stagnation and climbing.
VOD review of your own games
Nothing reveals your patterns as clearly as rewatching your own losses. Do not focus on individual lost duels but on recurring mistakes: do you often run alone into positions where you have no support? Do you buy at the wrong time? Two or three patterns recognised per week do more than a hundred further blind games.
Aim, but with purpose

Small agent pool, deep map knowledge
Two or three agents you really master beat ten you only half know. That way you can make yourself useful in almost any composition without improvising anew on every map. Know the standard setups of your main maps by heart, and you save thinking time in every round.
Mental strength and baseline stability
Composure wins rounds. Anyone who does not panic after a lost pistol round makes better decisions. The “hardstuck” fallacy
Hardly any term persists as stubbornly as “hardstuck” – the conviction that you are stuck in a rank even though you are actually better. In the vast majority of cases this is a fallacy. Over hundreds of games the win rate does not lie: your rank is ultimately a fairly honest reflection of your current performance, including consistency, nerves and decisions under pressure. Anyone who believes they are stuck only because of bad teammates overlooks that, over many games, these teammates statistically affect both teams equally.

Can I climb several divisions in one session?
Yes, if your MMR is well above your current rank. Then there are high RR gains and sometimes upward jumps. Once visible rank and MMR align, progress becomes steadier again.
Does demotion count the same as promotion?
In essence yes: if you drop to 0 RR and lose again, you fall a division and land in the upper range of the tier below. A small buffer usually prevents a single loss from causing immediate demotion.
