Who is Deadlock in VALORANT?

Deadlock is the uncompromising guardian of the roster – a Norwegian ex-soldier who locks down entire access points with cutting-edge nanowire technology. As a Sentinel she holds areas with sensors and barriers and takes dangerous enemies completely out of the game with a deadly cocoon.

Deadlock arrived in 2023 and brought a very defensive, clear Sentinel identity. Her kit revolves around lockdown and slowing: a sonic sensor concusses enemies who get too loud, barriers block entire routes, a GravNet grenade forces foes to the ground, and her Ultimate catches an enemy in a nanowire cocoon and drags them to their death. Role

Deadlock's Role: the Locking-Down Guardian

In VALORANT there are four roles: Duelist, Initiator, Controller and Sentinel. Deadlock is a Sentinel – the role whose job is defence and lockdown. Sentinels lock down flanks, hold areas and give the team backup. Deadlock is the classic, defensively locking-down Sentinel type.

Her special contribution is the physical control of routes. Her barriers block entire access points and force enemies onto predictable routes, her sensor punishes anyone who advances too loudly, and her GravNet grenade robs attackers of speed and height. No other Sentinel seals off a choke so hard. Her Ultimate is also a safe way to remove the most dangerous enemy weapon from an important round.

As Deadlock you carry the responsibility to seal off access points and warn your team. Your utility is strong but limited – the difference between a good and an average Deadlock lies in placement: where do you block, where do you set the sensor, when do you force the push to the ground with GravNet? Barrier Mesh C – the Route Block

Barrier Mesh is Deadlock's blockade. You throw a barrier disc forward; on landing it creates several barriers that block movement from the impact point. Characters can't pass through – enemies have to take the detour while your team gains time. Use it to completely lock down an access point, delay a push or seal off a bomb site in the post-plant situation. Enemies can destroy the barriers with damage, but that costs them valuable seconds.

Sonic Sensor Q – the Trap Against Noise

Sonic Sensor is Deadlock's flank protection. You set up a sensor that monitors an area for sound. If an enemy makes footsteps, weapon fire or other significant noise inside it, they are concussed – for a moment they can barely aim. You can pick up and redeploy the sensor. It's ideal for securing a flank or an access point: an enemy who has to stay quiet often gives themselves away anyway – and gets punished.

GravNet E – the Ground Grenade

GravNet is Deadlock's signature ability. You throw a GravNet grenade – as an underhand toss in the alternate fire mode. On impact it detonates and forces all characters in range to crouch and move slowly. An enemy suddenly stuck to the ground and crawling is an easy target and can no longer pull off a fast push. Combine GravNet with your weapon or the sensor to slow attackers down at the decisive moment.

Annihilation X – the Nanowire Cocoon

Annihilation is Deadlock's Ultimate and one of the most spectacular effects in the game: you trigger a pulse of nanowires that spreads straight ahead and catches the first enemy who touches it. The captured enemy is dragged along a nanowire path and dies if they aren't freed. The cocoon is destructible – so their teammates can rescue them, but have to react quickly and exposed to do so. Use the Ultimate to safely take the enemy team's most dangerous weapon out of an important round.

Playing Deadlock Right: Tips for Every Level

Deadlock is easy to learn but demanding when it comes to placement. These tips take you from „I put a barrier somewhere" to „I lock down the whole site".

For Beginners: Place Utility Deliberately

The most common beginner mistake is placing barrier and sensor without a plan. Think about which access point you want to block and which flank you want to secure. Put the sensor on a route you can't see, so you get warned, and save the barrier for the decisive moment – for example to stop a push or seal off the Spike. Throw GravNet on an enemy you want to finish off right away.

For Advanced Players: Chain Utility Together

Deadlock's strength lies in the combination. Block an access point with the barrier so enemies can only come via one route, and set up your sensor there – anyone who gets too loud is concussed. If the push comes anyway, force it to the ground with GravNet and clean up with your weapon. This turns an entire choke into a kill zone that your team barely has to defend.

Deadlock is among the best agents for holding a bomb site alone. Barrier (block the access point), sensor (warning) and GravNet (slowing) make every push slow and costly while your team rotates.
