Phoenix's Role: the Self-Sufficient Entry

In VALORANT there are four roles: Duelist, Initiator, Controller and Sentinel. Phoenix is a Duelist – the role of the independent fraggers who go into the fight first and open rounds with kills. Duelists create space by clearing angles and fighting enemies down.

Blaze C – the fire wall

Blaze is Phoenix's vision cover. You create a wall of fire that moves forward – with the fire button held you can bend it toward your crosshair, for example around a corner. The wall blocks vision and deals damage to enemies who run through it. The clever part: Phoenix himself takes no damage in his fire, but is healed. Use the wall to seal a line of sight, cover yourself while peeking or heal on the side.

Curveball Q – the curving flash

Curveball is Phoenix's flashbang. You throw a torch orb in an arc – to the left in the default mode, to the right in the alternate fire mode – which explodes shortly after the throw and blinds every player who saw the explosion. Because it flies around the corner, you can blind enemies without exposing yourself. Throw it just before your peek so the effect kicks in exactly when you go for the duel. Curveball refills a charge after two kills.

Hot Hands E – the healing fireball

Hot Hands is Phoenix's signature ability. You hurl a fireball that explodes after a short time or on impact with the ground and leaves behind a fire field. Enemies in the field take damage – Phoenix himself is healed when he stands in it. Use the fireball to clear an angle, defend a planted Spike (enemies can't defuse unpunished) or bring yourself back to strength after a duel.

Run it Back X – the second life

Run it Back is Phoenix's Ultimate and one of the most spectacular effects in the game: you immediately place a marker at your position. After that you can charge forward completely risk-free – if you die or the timer runs out, Phoenix is brought back to the marker with full health (and the armor he had when casting). Use the Ultimate to aggressively gather information, peek a dangerous angle or force a duel without taking real risk.

Playing Phoenix Right: Tips for Every Level

Phoenix is easy to learn and demanding on flash timing. These tips take you from „I throw a flash somehow" to „I open every round".

For Beginners: Flash and Peek

The most important skill with Phoenix is the flash-and-peek. Throw Curveball around the corner just before you peek, and shoot the blinded enemy. Practice how far the flare flies so it pops at the right moment. Also use your Blaze to seal a line of sight, and step into the fire when you want to heal between duels.

For Advanced Players: Self-Heal & Ultimate Plays

Phoenix's strength lies in his self-sufficiency. Heal up with Blaze or Hot Hands after every duel to survive several fights in a row. And learn to use your Ultimate offensively: activate Run it Back right before a daring entry or a 1-on-1 – even if you die, you return with full health and now know where the enemy is.
