Who is Viper in VALORANT?

Viper is the master of map control. Where other controllers smoke off single angles, Viper poisons entire areas and forces her rhythm onto the enemy. She rewards planned, patient play like almost no other agent – and on the right maps she is simply indispensable.

Viper is an American chemist and has been part of the VALORANT roster from the very start. Her entire kit revolves around poison and control: she lays toxic smoke walls, sprays corrosive clouds and finally covers whole areas with her Ultimate. Unlike most controllers, two of her abilities work with a shared fuel system instead of fixed charges – a detail that makes Viper so deep and at the same time demanding.

For you as a player, that means: Viper is not a "run in and shoot" agent. She rewards preparation. Whoever learns her setups, smoke positions and the famous lineups (precalculated throw trajectories for the post-plant situation) makes the difference between a lost and a won round with her. Role

Viper's role: the map controller

In VALORANT there are four roles: Duelist, Initiator, Controller and Sentinel. Viper is a Controller – the role whose core task is to block sightlines with smoke and control spaces. Without a controller, a team can barely structure its attacks.

Viper is a special type of controller. While Omen or Astra place short smoke points anywhere on the map, Viper plays with walls and areas. Her long toxic wall (Toxic Screen) can split an entire site or a mid in two, so that her team only has to defend or attack one side. On top of that comes a defensive strength: her Ultimate and her poison areas are extremely well suited to defending a planted Spike (post-plant), because enemies can barely enter the defuse area without taking damage.

As Viper you therefore carry the responsibility for the structure of your team. With your walls you decide where the fights happen, and after the plant you cover the Spike. That is less spectacular than an entry frag, but just as decisive – and on large maps Viper is often the most important agent on the team.

Viper's kit consists of four abilities and a passive, all running on two central mechanics: fuel and decay. The icons and names here come directly from the official game data.

Fuel & decay – Viper's core mechanic

Before the individual abilities make sense, you have to understand two things. First, fuel: Poison Cloud and Toxic Screen share a single gauge. As long as these smoke walls are active, Viper consumes fuel; when it is empty, both switch off. If you deactivate them, the fuel slowly refills. Second, the decay effect: enemies (and Viper herself) standing in her poison gradually lose health down to a minimum. Only after leaving the poison does this life force regenerate. That's why enemies die much faster in Viper's smoke than elsewhere.

Snake Bite C – the acid pool

Snake Bite is a chemical launcher whose projectile bursts into a corrosive pool on impact. Enemies inside take damage, are slowed and decayed. This is Viper's most important tool for post-plant defense: after planting the Spike, you throw the acid exactly onto the bomb so that enemies cannot defuse it without rapidly losing health. Snake Bite is also ideal for clearing tight corners on entry.

Poison Cloud Q – the reusable smoke

Poison Cloud is a gas canister that you throw. At the push of a button you can then toggle the smoke cloud on and off as often as you like, as long as there is fuel. That makes it more flexible than any other smoke: you can deactivate it to peek through briefly or save fuel, and reactivate it instantly. The canister stays down for the whole round and can even be re-thrown when it is not active.

Toxic Screen E – the toxic wall

Toxic Screen is Viper's signature and her most powerful tool. At the start of the round you lay down a line of gas canisters across the map, which rise into a tall, long toxic wall at the push of a button. With it you can split an entire site or the mid in two: your team then only has to watch one side. Like Poison Cloud, the wall runs on fuel and can be toggled on and off.

Viper's Pit X – the Ultimate

Viper's Pit is Viper's Ultimate. She sprays a huge, dense poison cloud that covers a large area. Enemies inside can barely see anything and are heavily decayed (down to 1 health), while Viper herself sees her enemies highlighted within the cloud. This is perfect for completely taking over a site or making a planted Spike impossible to defuse. As long as Viper stays in the cloud, it persists.

Playing Viper right: tips for every level

Viper is one of the most learning-intensive agents – but the effort is worth it. These tips take you from "I smoke somehow" to "I control the round".

For beginners: don't waste fuel

The most common beginner mistake is letting Poison Cloud and Toxic Screen run the whole round until the fuel is empty – and then standing there without smoke at the decisive moment. Switch off your walls when they are not currently needed. That keeps fuel left for the push or the defense. Second tip: learn a fixed wall setup per site on your main maps – that gives you structure right away.

For advanced players: lineups & post-plant

Viper's true strength lies in post-plant defense. Learn a few lineups – precalculated throw trajectories with which you land your Snake Bite exactly on the planted Spike from a safe distance. Combined with Poison Cloud or the Ultimate, defusing becomes almost impossible for the enemy. This is exactly where, as Viper, you win rounds without ever having to enter a duel. Using the wall actively

Your toxic wall is not just a passive sight blocker. Because it decays enemies, you can use it offensively: force enemies to go through it (and take damage in the process), or hold an angle right at the wall where enemies come out weakened. Remember that you yourself are also decayed in your poison – so don't stand in it longer than necessary.

The best maps for Viper

Viper is especially strong on large, open maps, where her long toxic wall can split entire areas and long sightlines have to be controlled. On very compact maps she is a bit weaker, because short smoke points are often more practical there. The percentages are rough guide values, not an exact dataset.

Setup

Viper crosshair & settings

Even as a controller, Viper needs a good, calm crosshair – precisely because she often holds angles at her own toxic wall, where weakened enemies come out. A small, static crosshair with clear edges helps you win these duels reliably.

Viper is no exception when it comes to mouse sensitivity: better consistent and controlled than hectic. The majority of players end up at an eDPI (DPI × sensitivity) of 200 to 400.
